  • Five bike routes through Barcelona

We bring you five interesting routes that you can easily do by bike throughout the whole of Barcelona

The fashion of moving by bike is growing more and more. And Barcelona has become in the last decade one of the European cities that has more accessibility to cyclists of all levels, whether for leisure, work or as a means of daily transport. For that reason, today in The LoftTown we share an interesting post where we tell you the best five routes that you can do without any problem throughout the city. Are you ready to pedal? Take note!

For nature-loving sportsmen: The MontjuÏc route

How to appreciate a disconnection in nature. For this reason, we recommend that you start the walk in Plaza España and then head towards the Montjuic montain mountain. To do this, take the wide avenue that ends at the MNAC building. Once you have crossed Reina Cristina avenue you will be at the foot of this impressive building. Then simply head down the road that you will see on your right, take energy because it is an uphill for demanding cyclists. As you go forward you will notice the beginning of the Montjuic slope in your legs. If you are an athlete you will see that the challenge will be the maximum and we are sure that you will not abandon the path. The first stop you will see is Poble Espanyol, a complex built for the Universal Exposition of 1929, and which has 117 full-scale buildings and more than 25 local artisans who will teach you the meaning of Spanish culture.

Leaving Poble Espanyol you will continue the route through the Estadi Olímpic, an emblematic venue of the city built exclusively for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Beyond you will arrive at the Botanical Garden that has more than 10 hectares of gardens that will make you connect completely with nature. To end your tour, we suggest you go to Montjuic Castle, where you can see the port and the city’s coastline.

For architecture lovers: The ancient route

Sightseeing in Barcelona is a must. And for this you don’t have to be a tourist to discover new places in the historic center of Barcelona and you know it very well. Our recommendation is that you take the route of the old town through the small streets of the Gothic Quarter, El Borne and Barceloneta, since when you go by bike the feeling is different and you will see these neighborhoods with new eyes.

In the Gothic there are corners that you know, but surely you have never paid much attention to them. So when you do it on the bike you will see that you will feel as if you were inside a movie.

Surely you already knew that Barcino was the old name of the Catalan capital and you have even passed many times in front of the Roman wall of Barcelona, and perhaps you did not know where you were or the importance of this fantastic place. Construction of the Roman wall began in the 1st century, but the remains that are preserved today date from approximately the 3rd and 4th centuries. The Roman wall thus has almost 2000 years of history and is the largest monument of ancient Barcelona that is preserved to this day.

We recommend that you start your bike route through the Cathedral, then go to Plaça del Àngel and continue along Sotstinent Navarro street, Plaça del Traginers, Hostal del Sol street, Regomir, Gignàs, Avinyó, Bany nous and end the tour in Palla street. We assure you that after this tour you will see the old part of the city with different eyes.

For beach lovers: The Mediterranean route

One of the best bike routes in the city is along the sea coast. We encourage you to look from another angle and rediscover the seven most important beaches in the city, all in less than 30 minutes. We assure you that you will fully enjoy the pleasure of feeling the Mediterranean air on your face. We recommend you take your bike in the fishing district of Barceloneta and travel the entire coastline until you reach the Forum. The total trip will cost you about 30 minutes, but we recommend that you lengthen it and enjoy the ride by taking breaks at each beach.

For picnic lovers: The Picnic Route

Both the Ciutadella Park and the nature of Montjuic nature are perfect places to have a picnic in Barcelona. And best of all, you can get there without problems by bike. For this reason, we propose the bike route next to the green spaces of the city to make a different plan that will make you see Barcelona from another perspective. You can start from the Cervantes park, in the upper part of the city, as it has large areas of grass, wide lanes for the bike. On the other hand, we also recommend the Maternitat gardens in the Les Corts neighborhood, perfect for outdoor meals because there are many trees and spaces with pleasant shade, special for a fresh spring meal. If you like routes by the sea, the Mar Bella park is a genuine corner to have a good picnic with friends, since it has large areas of grass and next to it you have a great skate park in case you like skating .

For those who go from home to work: The sustainable route

Moving around Barcelona by bike is a pleasure and that is why we recommend that you use it as your means of transport on a daily basis, since in this way you also contribute to caring for the environment and you will feel much more physically and mentally active. To do this, you will find bike lanes throughout the city for your convenience. You no longer have excuses not to take your bike and go pedaling all over Barcelona. Today at The Lofttown we will show you that you don’t need to have a special budget to have the most fun during your last weeks in Barcelona. Can you come with us?

Get to know the Sagrada Familia

We know that museums in Barcelona cost a lot in some cases when you are a student. However, there is the possibility of visiting them completely free and perhaps you did not know it. This is the case of the Sagrada Familia, an emblem of the city and of European architecture, since every Sunday of the year it is open to the public, completely free, during the celebration of the good morning masses. Of course, you will have to get up early to be able to arrive on time and take a square in the basilica, since there are many people who like you will have the same idea. Also keep in mind that the capacity is limited and that many faithful people, especially older adults, always come to Sunday mass as tradition dictates and it will not cost them anything to get up early before you.

    Discover the Picasso Museum

One of those places that you have to visit during your stay in Barcelona, yes or yes, is without a doubt the splendid Picasso Museum. Hence, it is one of the most important and most visited museums in all of Catalonia. For this reason, remember that if you go on Thursday afternoons from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., you will be able to access totally free and take a good bath of art with all the magnificent works that the great artist Pablo Picasso left as an inheritance to the city during the time he lived in the Catalan capital.

    Enjoy the free concerts

Although it is true that we still live within strong restrictions by the authorities due to Covid-19, Barcelona still has an interesting musical proposal for all tastes and, best of all, totally free. To do this, we recommend that you discover the cultural plans of the different neighborhoods of Barcelona, because they always organize some kind of musical show in the open air and with the respective security measures.

Take advantage of the neighborhood parties

Barcelona’s neighborhoods are the spirit of the city. And for this, popular festivals are the best way to fully integrate into Barcelona life as if you were part of its history. Our recommendation is that when summer arrives, be alert to all the cultural and leisure events organized by the most important neighborhoods such as Gracia, Santa, Poblenou, Barceloneta or Raval. We assure you that you will have complete fun and experience firsthand the most authentic traditions of the city.

    Walk the beaches

There is no more fun and economical plan than going to the beaches of Barcelona. Here you can enjoy splendid experiences with friends, either sunbathing, doing sports and bathing along the Mediterranean Sea. And it is that in any of the beaches of Barcelona you will find all the atmosphere you need and with everything you need, between bars and restaurants, so that your spring and summer days are the best.

    Excursions to the forest

If you are more about parks and forests, you have to know that Barcelona has several interesting options that will make you fully connect with nature. For example, just a few minutes from the city you have all the vegetation that Montjuic offers you, an ideal space to do sports outdoors or celebrate picnics with friends. On the other hand, if you like long walks more without many people around, about 20 minutes from the city by car or train, you can find the Collserola natural park, a fantastic option for nature lovers and where you can do long walks, yoga and meditation sessions, mountain biking or even barbecues with friends.

    Outdoor cinema

Watching a movie has never been as safe and fun as the open-air cinema. In Barcelona you have the opportunity to enjoy good independent films of all time, either on Barceloneta beach or at Montjuic Castle. Both options are great if you are a lover of the seventh art. And best of all, completely free. You will only have to take care of the pica pica and the drinks. With this post today we hope you have learned much more about how to enjoy Barcelona for free.
